Bluebirds on Accordion, Dale Mathis Lesson 1

I worked my way through the first 4 lessons by Liberty Bellows but then I discovered Dale Mathis.

https://www.dalemathisaccordion.com/sheet-music--60-lessons.html . I'm following his "Play by Ear Lessons but he provides sheet music which is really nice so I can go faster.

Extremely good lessons. This is my first song I learned from him.

I'm up to about lesson 5 playing "The Can Can Polka" which is similar to Liberty Bellows lesson 4. I think I might like Liberty Bellows fingering better.

These are my sister-in-law's favorite polkas from Dale Mathis site. I need to learn alternating bass pattern.

  • Julida
  • Beer Barrel
  • Rain Rain
  • Tinker
I was hoping she'd play accordion with me at the in-laws family reunion but she didn't sound interested. She suggested Melodic Adventures in Bass-Land for the Accordion by John Caruso book 12 of 13: Palmer-Hughes Accordion Course from when she took lessons 10 years ago. So I ordered it.

My husband likes Blue Skirt Waltz. So my goal is to learn these 5 polkas before the in-laws reunion in summer.

Playing with my Friends button toy accordion in October 2025

It's diatonic. Takes a little bit of time to get used to it.

https://youtube.com/shorts/kw5J6LUGlKU

On the other hand, all 3 toy keyboard accordions did not work. Either their buttons or the keys didn't make a sound and the bellows leaked. Extremely poor quality. All the same instrument but different colors.

My husband bought me a toy diatonic accordion from menards and that one works.

Then I bought an 8 bass Honica keyboard accordion and that  worked. I could have been happy enough with that but then I had an opportunity to buy a second hand 120 bass accordion for the same price. So I returned the 8 bass accordion.

I'm glad that I have the 120 bass because it gives me more options.

Ordered 17 key 8 bass piano green Toy Accordion from Jsung through walmart 10/13/25. Also Liberty Bellows

It should arrive between 10/28-11/4/25. Has extended free holiday returns until 1/31/26. Not available so walmart canceled order.

I've been listening to Liberty Bellows, "How to play 12 bass piano Accordion." which looks like it has 2 octaves from lower C, through middle C, ending in higher C.

https://youtu.be/vz2veabxKrI?si=_OcxkSiZc2ok8PjR

  • 1st 3 lessons use 5 finger chord pattern with your thumb on middle C. Use march or alternating bass/chord pattern in left hand.
  • In Lesson 4 the C scale and the C arpeggio are taught.
  • In Lesson 5, waltz rhythm and chord inversions are taught
  • In Lesson 6, G scale and arpeggio are taught

Lessons:

  • Lesson 1, One chord song using C chord in C major, Row, Row, Your Boat.
  • Lesson 2, Two chord song using C and G in C major, Ode to Joy
  • Lesson 3, Three chord song using C, G, and F in C major, When the Saints go Marching in.
  • Lesson 4, Two chord song using C and G in C major, French Can-Can.
  • Lesson 5, Three chord song using C, G, and F in C major, On Top of Old Smokey

Also listened to "How to Play Minors on a 12-Bass Accordion by Sophie's Smokin' Squeezebox.

  1. Play root note
  2. Play root note and 5th
  3. Play relative minor 7ths
  4. Play minor with right hand
Haven't watched these yet but they looks interesting

Silver Comet Trail March 2022

Silver Comet trail is a very wide trail with a lot of amenities on the Atlanta Georgia side. On Sunday there was also a lot of traffic; walkers, bikers, skaters, skateboards....

We biked most of it except for the part where the trail left the train grade and became super hilly after Nathan Dean Park trailhead. From the Alabama side we lost the trail just on the other side of the Cedartown Welcome center where the neighborhood was interesting. It looked like some economic development was at the beginning stages and some houses were starting to be rehabbed. It might be nice to visit there in a couple of years and see the change.

We picked up a Silver Comet trail map in Rockmart. Nice town. Interesting stone buildings. This is one of the best trail maps I've seen. Decorative and informative.

Rome GA March 2022

Some brochures I picked up while we were vacationing in Rome GA from 3/26-3/31/22.

We just blindly picked Rome GA but it is a very nice town with lots of amenities and very close to the trails we wanted to bike. Rome also has lots of trails which we didn't explore except for one because we were biking the Silver Comet and Chief Ladiga trails. We wanted to see the world's largest overshot water wheel at Berry College but it looked like it was closed until May. Don't listen to GPS. Probably best way to get to Rome is to take 278 from 65. We prefer to avoid 24 due to super high traffic volume.

On our last day in Rome, we walked the Mt. Berry trail. There was a guy fishing in the pond. Mostly farmland on one side. There were some sitting swings on the riverside. Sun was really hot and it was windy. It will be really neat when this trail connects to Ridge Ferry Trail.

We drove through Cave Springs a couple of times on the way to parts of bike trails. It looked really interesting.

Anyway lots of things to see and do in and around Rome GA.
