Things to do when changing cell phone providers

  1. Verify phone is unlocked with current provider which takes about 2 days
  2. Verify account number and transfer pin. If you have moved, the zip code that was on the credit card you used to set up the account with the current provider may be different then your current zip code. This can affect the verification process.
  3. Porting phone number to new provider can happen the same day
  4. After phone number has been ported you need to call the new provider to set up you regular visual voice mail.
I ended up using a number on google voice so I wouldn't be without a phone. Texting worked fine but everything I tried to do without contacting the new provider did not work to set up voice mail on the phone.

Everyone was really nice. Phone wait times were a lot less in the morning during the week.

Changing cell phone providers and keeping the same phone number is a hassle and tricky

I am in the process of switching from spectrum to puretalk.

Last week my husband added me to the puretalk plan and we get immediately charged for adding my phone. Puretalk told me I needed to contact spectrum and verify account number and get transfer pin.

Tuesday I verified my account number was the right one and found out that the security code on the bill is the transfer code.

So I got my SIM card for pure talk on Friday. We call give them the information. Porting my number didn't work. So I had to call spectrum. Zip code error. When we originally signed up for spectrum several years ago we lived somewhere else. The credit which is the same credit card we are still using in spectrum's forced autopay program is listed with our old zip code even though we have updated the credit card and spectrum with our new address.

Ok so supposedly that worked. NOT. It turns out that I need to unlock my phone. Really people, couldn't someone have told me upfront while I was verifying my account number and getting the transfer code. I blame both spectrum and puretalk for this lack of information.

Oh and by the way, every time we call either cell phone provider we have to go through their menu and wait between 15 and 45 minutes to talk to a representative.

I would love to be able to do this online. However spectrum chat is closed on Saturday and Sunday. There is no option on spectrum's site to unlock my paid in full phone.

Also puretalk site doesn't have a chat. We couldn't find how to transfer my cell phone number to my husband's account. It doesn't say anything about having to unlock my phone when I'm trying to transfer my phone and number to them.

I hope I can get my phone working before I go out of town next week. Right now I cannot text even though I turned my phone on and off multiple times. Hope I'm not missing any important messages for stuff that needs to get done or responded to immediately since I'm on call.

Oh yeah. I forgot to mention. Every time that I switch between the sim cards to see if my number and phone has ported/transferred I have to choose my language and redo the security stuff on my iphone 6. I don't want a new phone. This one is paid off and works fine for making phone calls and texting.
